Title: The Wrong Kind of Love
Author: Lexi Ryan
Series: The Boys of Jackson Harbor #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Rating: ☆☆☆☆
Trigger Warnings: assault / addiction / miscarriage
Levi and Ellie’s story is my favourite in this series, and ironically it’s the one with the least amount of romance in it. This is because the storyline is so interesting from the beginning. Ellie is assaulted almost to death, and her fiance Colton (who struggles with drug/substance addiction) is not only missing but blamed as the culprit. Ellie’s side of the story is spent recovering her memories from amnesia, and Levi’s is from watching in as someone who loved her from the first moment he saw her, but Ellie’s his best friend’s girl and therefore meant to be off-limits. I really enjoyed the back and forth between “before and after” the accident and uncovering secrets with Ellie getting her memory back. I also think the approach of the difficult topics in this book were done tastefully. I really loved the plot twists in Lexi Ryan’s YA Fantasy a great deal, and because you just didn’t quite have all the information you needed until it was revealed in this book, I liked this story a whole lot because she did that in These Hollow Vows too. Both characters face a lot of emotional angst and have these pockets of joy or connection that are executed at the right times. It didn’t feel tacky or out of place in the overall progression. Their romance is beautifully done, not too heavy that it takes from the mystery of what happened to Ellie (and Colton), but is enough for it to feel real and buildable. I didn’t guess who the perpetrator was until just before it clicks for Ellie, and was happy that I was kept fooled till the end. Unfortunately, with that all resolved, we had to fall back into romance land, and I found the ending a little weak, but that was really my only critique about this story.
