Title: Neon Gods
Author: Katee Robert
Series: Dark Olympus #1
Genre: Erotic Romance / fantasy / retelling
Rating: ☆☆☆
This was my first erotic romance read, and I admittedly I've come away not a fan of the genre. Whilst I can respect that this was somewhat tastefully done, I found myself skipping all the sex scenes early into it and reading on only for the plot. Admittedly, I didn't enjoy the storyline much either. It took me some time to get used to the modern aspect of the world, which I came to appreciate Robert's attempt as I read on and was one of the things I did like by the end of it. I also really enjoyed Persephone and her sisters' interactions. I equally was fond of Hades' friendships with Hermes and Dionysus.
I didn't quite grasp any emotional connection between Hades and Persephone that felt believable. Their relationship was much too rushed (even with intimacy aside), and the ILYs delivered so soon into it also. Of course, they faced a lot of issues together, which enabled them to spend time with each other to build their relationship, but I just felt like at every point where there was a chance for growth, the answer was to have sex again - which I totally get is the point to this genre. It just felt like their relationship was told rather than experienced, and it didn't sit well with me, unfortunately.
