Cop An Attitude is a very quick read. Admittedly, I didn’t love nor hate this book. It follows two 38-year olds who had a history from their childhood that was less than ideal that meet again as adults and have to navigate feelings for each other, concerns over past behaviour and face their own traumas. Whilst that sounds quite heavy, the book is written to be more light-hearted and funny, which is probably why I didn’t quite enjoy this. I often found the actions of both Waverly and Pete (Waverly especially) to be far too petty and childish for their age and had a difficult time placing them in my mind whilst reading. For some time, I could only depict college-aged people and was surprised when their age came to light. I also couldn’t understand how deeply they fell for the other when most of the book is written about them struggling with said feelings without really any building scenes that helped those feelings grow. I did enjoy the side characters, especially Sydney, who remained a grounding force for Waverly throughout this book. Some moments were quite funny as well, whilst others felt a little too unrealistic for me given their stages in life. I’m a mid-30s person myself, so I was initially eager for some age representation in novels that I don’t normally come across. It didn’t quite deliver. The romance was clean, and again, could have done with a little more attention to help the feelings they developed feel real. Overall, it was a good attempt by the author, and I could see the potential of the world Hilary Grossman created.
